Just in case you were wondering, Little Man is alive and well and in the middle of the very complex process of being manufactured. Pieces are being assembled. Finished components are stacking up. Tiny bits of secret stuff are being machined and fabricated. Four very skilled dedicated people are working full time to insure that LM is finished as soon as humanly possible. Sometimes parts are delayed or not available. Sometimes we have to wait in line for a certain bit of machining or mold making to be completed. Sometimes something or other blows up and we have to re-make it.  Everything is being done that I and the team can think of to get the little guy out of the shop and into your hands as soon as possible.
Despite all my best smarty pants calculation, There seems to be no known formula for accurately predicting exactly when this process will be completed. All I can promise here is that LM  will be finished..and it will be perfect when its done.

Sounds like a new movie title in Hollywood?  Not so much.

What is Ultracinese?

Ultracinese is the latest, most sought after new close up effect by Leonardo Milanesei and Netmagicas.  It gives you the ability to spin a nut off a bolt with just the power of your mind.  No threads no magnets and looks like real magic. A lot of famous magicians are using ULTRACINESE in there shows.

So what’s the Problem?

Pirates are the problem! they are long haired, long bearded, stinky men with hooks for hands….but that is just in the movies.

The new modern day pirates are people that take someone else’s ideas, make cheap and inferior quality copies and deceive people into buying them as the original versions. Unfortunately this happens a lot in the Magic industry.  Especially due to online auctions and unrepeatable dealers. With Most of the Piracy coming from countries outside the USA there seems to be little anyone can do about it. Or can we?

What can we do about it?

The magic industry needs to fire up their own Anti-Piracy campaign. I think the only way to keep these Pirates from profiting by ripping people off is to educate the magic buyers and encourage them to not buy these rip off, knock off, inferior copies of the originals.  The creators of magic take a lot of time and research and often times a lot of money to come up with and developed magic products for the market. The Pirates, just copy it with no regard for anyone but themselves.

So, in my effort to help this educate the buying public I am exposing many of the copies and fraudulent producers of magic. I will start with the great effect called Ultracinese.  

Pretty much any Ultracinese you find on Ebay are copies, knock off’s and pirated.

If you have or are considering an Ultracinese that look like any of these photos then are a victim of a Pirate!

This one I find especially interesting, they are both Pirate copies.  They are trying to show you how their pirate copy (left) is better then someone else’s Pirate copy (right)

New Changes for the US Playing Card Company:

A little history:

The United States Playing Card Company is the leader in the production and distribution of premier brands of playing cards, including Bee, Bicycle, Aviator, KEM, Tally Ho, and Hoyle playing cards, plus other gaming accessories like Poker chips.
The privately held company, has been based in Cincinnati, Ohio since it’s founding in 1867, manufactures, markets and distributes playing cards, children's card games, collectible tins, puzzles and card accessories.

While at their first location on College Street, the firm printed theatrical and circus posters, placards and labels. By 1872, the business had increased so much, it was forced to seek larger quarters, and in November 1872, it moved into a new, four-story building on nearby Race Street.

The Present & Future:
They have now moved to a high tech facility in Hebron, Kentucky as of July 2009. They will be investing in excess of $30 million over the next two years to establish a new manufacturing, distribution and headquarters on the new 40 Acre campus.  USPCC will relocate to a 570,000 square foot facility on the campus. The facility will be the headquarters operations for USPCC, which has been located in the Greater Cincinnati city of Norwood, Ohio since 1901.  The campus will also serve as the headquarters for Loew-Cornell, a respected leader in the art and craft supply market and also part of Jarden Branded Consumables, whose corporate functions will be relocated to Boone County from Englewood, NJ.  They have decided to take on the move in an effort to modernize their facilities and equipment, in order to remain competitive in the next 100 years.

USPCC will continue to have operations in Cincinnati, including a display of the company's museum of historical playing cards dating back to the fourteenth century.

Bicycle cards:

Bicycle has been the best selling playing card brand in the world for more than 100 years. The US Playing Card Company has already unveiled a new box design for their Bicycle Rider Back 808 playing cards, the most popular selling card, both for them as well as magic shops world wide.

Murphy’s Magic Supplies, Inc. has purchased the entire remaining inventory of the decks featuring the classic Bicycle box design. After we sell through the stock on hand, we will carry the new design. The design to the outside box design is the only thing to change on these cards. Inside you still have the same design, and the same quality that you know and trust.  We will continue offer the classic style tuck case while supplies last.

We will have more information on the New decks as we prepare to bring them to you.

Catch by Ben Seidman – DVD  Show your hands empty, spring cards into the air, catch the selected card!  Yep, it is that good!  You get the supplies you need to make the gimmick so you will have a little work to do but it will be worth doing.  The instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. 

Approaching Magic by David Regal – Book  We are so lucky to be able to offer this book, I have had a lot of customers ask if we are getting it.  Now it is here.  Big book, lots of magic and theories on Magic.  Must have for anyone that is serious about learning magic.

While at Blackpool I spent some time with my friends at World Magic Shop.  They had some great releases that I mentioned previously such as Coinvex 2, etc.  I wanted to point out one that you should not overlook the title Pentacle.  I initially honestly overlooked how good this was until Craig Petty demonstrated some of the possibilities.  Many of these effects look like trick photography.  There is an amazing instant transposition between 2 and 4 cards that is super easy and looks fabulous.

Souvenir Linking Rubber Bands by Paul Harris just came in today.  This is great and I'd strongly recommend it.  Basically Paul has figured out a way to manufacture rubber bands that are linked together in the manufacturing process; thus no more slits, glued together bands, etc.  The instructional DVD that is included is hilarious (filmed by Joe Russell) and very thorough.  It includes care of the bands, a few great switches, CMH, etc.  

Speaking of Paul Harris, as some of you may know there was a very small precutting of defective True Astonishments disks.  The replicator immediately sent us replacement units that we have been sending out to anyone who has contacted us with issues.  In the mean time, the replicator also took back all of the remaining sets, unassembled them, destroyed all the DVDs (good and bad to play it safe), ran a complete rerun of all DVDs, and have reassembled and resent them to us.  We received these a few days back. Between fixing any existing issues and the new rerun of all units we should see this problem disappear soon. 

I wanted to give a little review on some of the newest products we received. 

Lecture Package Limited by Daniel Garcia book (LIMITED)  This is a great little booklet from Daniel Garcia.  This says it is a collection of Notes from Daniel Garcia but it is more then just notes.  There are fantastic illustrations and some of Daniels best stuff.  You will see everything from Card tricks/moves, coins, rings, rubber bands,  NO SMOKING!, and bill penetrations.   Great stuff Daniel!

Devils Mark (Sigillum Diaboli) by Alan Rorrison and Big Blind Media: A one-handed, insanely visual, cover free version of Roy Walton's Card Warp! As with other BBM DVD’s the production is great.  Very detailed instructions and easy to follow.  This would be a great addition to your favorite card warp or even on it’s own. 

Argus Eye PRO:  An Ultimate Weapon for Mentalist.  This nice little device will let you detect anything magnetic with your bare hands!  Nothing to hold.  The detectable range is adjustable, easy to hook up and the possibilities are endless.  There is a way to tell if someone has a coin in their hands face up or down.

Surefire by Mark Southworth and RSVP Magic – DVD  Production quality is great as expected from RSVP.  There is a lot of content in this DVD, Mark has something for everyone.   He is working with Cards, coins, chop cup, thread reels, billiard balls, rings and more.  Here is where you can find some of the items used in this dvd. Be sure to pick them up with the DVD.  Double blank cards, Roughing Fluid,  Expanded shell, Chop Cups, Thread Reels.

The Tarantula by Yigal Mesika (Coming soon)

Ok, I am sure you have heard the word on the street about this new item from Mr. Mesika called the Tarantula.

So what is the Tarantula? Tarantulas are a group of hairy and often very large spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae. But that’s not important here.

The Tarantula is a new electric invisible thread reel device.

It is very stealthy, let’s say you can have it in the palm of your hands and no one will see it.  (not like the picture)  See the demo video!

It is designed not to tangle, easy to fix and replace the thread spool and battery, it is virtually invisible and you can do some extraordinary levitating or floating of objects with it.

You have complete control of the thread management (reel in and out)

Some things you can do with the Tarantula:

I got a chance to skim through this book and I really liked what I read.  I haven’t done restaurant magic before but I have thought about it.  My problem is I wouldn’t know how to even start or what kind of magic to do.  Jim really lays it out from start to finish!  He covers all the issues that may come up and how to handle them.  Even how to make money doing it!

Jim offers some great references to the type of magic to do. Like, if you are performing for children then you should consider these. coins across, Rubber Band Magic, silk vanish, magic with a glass, silverware, napkin, and every day objects.  He refers to some great books like Life Savers by Michael Webber, and videos from Gregory Wilson, Dan Harlan, and Tom Mullica. 

You should pick up The Restaurant Magic Reader if you are looking into performing magic in a restaurant or if you already do this type of work.
